Wisdom–Its Source and Purpose

(14) But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;  (15)  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.  (16)  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Timothy 3:14-16

Just what is the purpose of wisdom? Why do we need it anyway? Do we need it? The answer, of course, is yes. Wisdom is of absolute necessity if we are going to live the Christian life in a godly manner. And as we can see from this portion of scripture, wisdom’s source is the holy scriptures, or God’s Word.

Here we see that Paul tells Timothy to continue in the things he had learned. That word continue carries with it the idea of dwelling or tarrying in. Paul didn’t want Timothy to simply have a passing knowledge of God’s Word, but to dwell in it and live it out in his life. And that command is no different for us than it was for Timothy. If we plan on living a life that honors God and leads others to Christ, we must be looking continually in the Scriptures for God’s leading in our lives.

Now, perhaps this whole concept of living a holy life seems foreign to you. Maybe you have never really thought about this whole salvation thing before. If that is the case, then you need to stop right here and make some decisions. You see, the principles in God’s Word will work in anyone’s life because God’s Word is absolute truth. But, if you don’t know God and haven’t made a profession of faith, then all will be for naught when you leave this life. The scriptures are very clear on the fate of those that have not accepted Christ as their savior. I urge you to take the time to be sure. Get out your Bible, read it, and ask God to reveal himself to you. If you don’t know where to start, try the Gospel of John. You can also check out www.needgod.com. Do whatever it takes to find out where you stand with God. Because judgment day is too late and we have no guarantee of tomorrow. Show some wisdom. You’ll be glad you did.

Next time we will look at the value of wisdom. See you then.
